Alfredo Häberli Design Development

At the beginning of each design process, a series of different images comes to mind. These images differ greatly from one another: models, references, and vague memories. But they also include humorous, ironical and satirical pictures. If I have a designer's block at hand, I might sketch them. I also often consult my cartoon books. This helps me to relax and unwind, makes me grin and reactivates my ideas. Cartoons have a number of things in common with my work. The issue is to reduce, to say as much as possible with as few lines  as possible – and if possible, without words. Like with design, the aim is the optimisation and economy of the means employed – which in this case, is the line. These kinds of thought processes are laid down in my little sketchbooks or on scraps of paper. The drawings here show other sides of me, other ideas of mine. Perhaps, someday, I will make a book out of them. But for now, they are individual images that I call «the lines of my thoughts».
